One of my absolutely favorite authors has to be Dr. Wayne Dyer. His books and audio tapes truly have inspired me to make some very positive changes in my life! One of his most memorable quotes :
Change your Thoughts and Change your Life
When I first heard him say this it really didn’t hit home until I had time later that day to think about it. It is one of those phrases that kind of can slip right by you if you aren’t paying attention, you know?
We are as happy as we want to be
Woah…wait a minute…is she trying to tell me that I set it up in my life to be miserable? You bet I am. If you find yourself feeling unhappy and depressed, you have the ability to change your thoughts. So, happiness is a thought away, literally.
One interesting thing you have to remember is that you get what you focus on, whether you want it or not. For example…I have been trying to lose weight. There are weeks were I’m not quite on the ball – but this past week I was spot on with my workouts and my diet. So, when I stepped on the scale this morning and saw that I didn’t lose anything (in fact I gained a pound); life gave me 2 choices:
- I could be unhappy and miserable and beat myself up believing that I’m not good enough and that this whole losing weight thing is stupid so I should just quit.~or~
- I could be happy and proud with myself for working so hard this week and realize that the pound I gained more has to do with building muscles.
Choosing option 1 is where I have been for most of my adult life; believing I’m just not worth the effort. This consistently would lead me down the path of quitting my workout program (AGAIN) and would lead to a few months of binge eating. Once sick of the binging I would repeat the same cycle again…over and over.
But, what happens when I choose option 2? I change my thoughts and focus on the good things I have done and the positive changes going on in my body. I don’t sweat the small stuff like losing a pound…I focus on the progress I’ve made by keeping my self-promises and reward myself by giving myself an “atta girl” for a hard weeks work. This leaves me feeling hopeful and positive and definitely more happy than option #1.
So you can see that when you change your thoughts…you can change your life. (Thank you Wayne Dyer!) Focus on the good and the blessings in every situation (and there are blessings in EVERY situation, trust me).
Wishing you a Happy Thrusday!
